A Complete History - NeSSI™
New Sampling/Sensor Initiative (NeSSI™)
This effort started with an ad-hoc group of end-users and equipment manufacturers within CPAC who are looking to modularize and miniaturize process analyzer sample system components to simplify and standardize sample system design. The goals for NeSSI™ are to facilitate the acceptance and implementation of miniature, modular sample systems that has resulted in an ISA SP76 standard and to promote the concept of "smart" analytical systems by closely integrating flow, pressure and temperature with analytical sensors.
NeSSI™ has evolved to be useful for Process Optimization Studies, as well as for Process Control applications.

Tabulated results from the SAM Applet end-user requirements exercise are now available on-line Rick Ales, Swagelok provided an interesting comparison of "tophat" communication interfaces for potential NeSSI™-bus components showing an example of relative cost of the different communication bus options as they exist today. This document was provided as a follow-up to discussions at the workshop. A presentation, "Utilizing NeSSI™ for Analytical Applications" was given in a general technical report session of the CPAC Fall Sponsor Meeting. |

Revised Generation II specification released |
A revised specification for NeSSI™ Generation II has been released. This revision further refines the envisioned architecture and functionality for second generation NeSSI™ systems and reflects the "evergreen" status for the specification. As always, comments and contributions are solicited from end-users, manufacturers, and developers. |

In addition Ulrich Bonne, Honeywell, has provided a summary of the NeSSI™ presentations and a list of possible applications, benefits, and sensors for NeSSI™ compiled from the Focus Group discussions. He also included a trip report from the DoE-OIT Sensors and Controls Meeting, Las Vegas, NV, 10-12 June 2002where the NeSSI™ white paper was presented and discussed. Rob Dubois and Jeff Gunnell collaborated on a forward-looking review of progress in process analytics in the year 2012 in which NeSSI™ and other current initiatives play a critical role. Peter van Vuuren chaired a session titled "Industry Analytics Initiatives: Status & Plans" where NeSSI™ developments were presented, links to the talks can be found in the session agenda, found here. The CPAC Fall sponsor meeting was held November 5 - 8 at the University of Washington in Seattle. Jim Tatera put the spotlight on NeSSI™ on three occasions. Mon Nov 8: Sponsor Symposium The presentation (see CPACFall_M.ppt) updated the CPAC audience about the new analytical sensors and probes announced at ISA2001. Mon Nov 8: NeSSI™ Update Session An overview of the current status of NeSSI™ and a short overview of the Generation II spec was presented (see CPACFall_N.ppt) Wed Nov10: NeSSI™ Focus Group The Focus Group presentation (CPACFall_F.ppt). It is a "condensed" version of ISA/INTERMAC Tutorial. Several more people signed up for the A-, C- and X-teams respectively. |

INTERMAC 2001 |
ISA (The Instrumentation, Systems, and Automation Society), JEMIMA (The Japan Electric Measuring Instruments Manufactures' Association) and SICE ( The Society of Instrument and Control Engineers) are presenting a joint conference on virtual and real technology for industrial measurement and control applications in the new millennium. The conference was held November 7 - 9, 2001 in Tokyo in conjunction with the 29th INTERMAC 2001, the largest exhibition for International Measurement and Control in Japan. Rob Dubois presented the NeSSI™ tutorial- see the ISA2001 meeting above. CPAC's main objective for sponsoring this trip was to introduce the NeSSI™ concept to the Asian process analytical community. The presentation was well accepted albeit with lower attendance than Houston ISA. The outcome we believe will be greater involvement from Japan and the Far East in the coming months. |
